Working with Amwell Medical Group

What is Amwell Medical Group?

Amwell Medical Group (AMG) is a national physician-owned and operated medical practice that includes licensed and board-certified clinicians in urgent care, primary care, behavioral health (including therapy and psychiatry), nutrition and lactation. We serve our payer health plan, health system, and employer group patients via Amwell's state-of-the-art, HIPAA-compliant, video-based Converge platform across all 50 states and the District of Columbia – 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. Our clinicians are both single- and multi-state licensed and credentialed to work with our client referrals across the country.

What types of clinicians do we work with?

AMG works with clinicians in the following areas: urgent care, therapy, psychiatry, nutrition, lactation, and primary care (also known as the Medical Continuity Program). You can find more details on qualifications and eligibility for each of these AMG business lines on their specific program pages.

What happens after I submit my application to become a clinician on the platform?

After you submit your application, our credentialing team will promptly review and begin processing it. This step is crucial to ensure that your credentials align with our criteria, you meet our standards for clinician approval, and we have all the necessary information. Typically, this review and processing takes around 7-10 business days. We will notify you once your application has been approved or if we need any additional information from you.

What type of training do you offer?

We are committed to supporting our clinicians with top-notch resources and training. All clinicians have access to our comprehensive video-based training modules, designed to enhance your skills and ensure you’re well-prepared to succeed on our platform. This training includes an overview of the Amwell platform and telehealth best practices. AMG clinicians are required to complete the training and pass a final assessment to see patients. These videos cover a wide range of topics and are tailored to meet your needs, providing you with valuable insights and the latest best practices. We believe that continuous professional development is key to delivering excellent care and are excited to offer these resources to help you thrive.

How does documentation work with a video visit?

Clinicians document on our proprietary EMR directly on the Amwell platform. Clinicians have the flexibility to complete documentation either during the visit or in a wrap-up session post-visit. Templates are available in all business lines to expedite accurate documentation, and for programs that require continuity of care, both intake and follow-up templates are available to ensure thorough and consistent documentation.

How much time do I need to commit?

The amount of time you need to commit to telehealth ultimately depends on your preferences and availability. One of the key benefits of telehealth is the flexibility it offers in determining your schedule.

For urgent care clinicians, you have the option to practice on-demand, meaning you can log into the telehealth platform and see patients at times that are convenient for you.

Participating MCP clinicians need to commit to at least 10 hours of availability per week, between Monday and Friday, 8 AM – 8 PM (patient local time).

For clinicians in other specialties, you can choose to open specific appointment slots for patients to book in advance.

How are patients directed to the system?

Patients access our clinicians directly through Amwell or receive benefits from an employer or insurance provider that is contracted with AMG. All billing and payments from patients are handled administratively and are not the clinician's responsibility. AMG clinicians do not bring patients to the practice—we do that work for you!

How does my state licensure work when practicing through telehealth?

You will be able to see patients who are physically located in any state where you hold an active and unrestricted license. This ensures that you are practicing within the legal requirements for telehealth services and providing care to patients in compliance with state regulations.

How will patients find me?

Patients will find you through their insurer’s patient portal which brings them to our Amwell platform where they can easily browse services by specialty or practice name. They will only see clinicians who are licensed in their state, ensuring they receive appropriate care. Our extensive patient base comes from partnerships with major health systems, hospitals, payer health plans, and employer groups.

What happens in the event of an emergency?

AMG is designed to offer outpatient care for patients with low to moderate acuity needs. AMG is not an emergency or crisis service, and patients are informed of this before signing up for treatment. However, we understand that there may be instances when patients require emergency support. In such cases, our team is here to assist. Processes defined in our Emergency Policy enable clinicians to quickly assess the situation, form a plan of action, and engage with the Network Operations Center (NOC) to contact emergency transport or assessment services local to the patient.

How is quality care maintained?

AMG’s Clinical Quality team works with our clinical leadership to develop policies, guidelines, and protocols. In addition, the Clinical Quality team performs regular chart reviews on every clinician for documentation and key metrics, providing feedback to clinicians monthly and recommending supplemental training as appropriate. This is a part of our secret sauce- ensuring all clinicians are aware of and practicing the most current evidence-based standards of care. The communications are professional and friendly, and the relationships with our Quality team are designed to be supportive.

What resources are available to clinicians?

AMG offers a variety of resources to ensure clinicians can deliver the highest quality care:

Who covers my malpractice insurance for telehealth visits?

AMG provides up to $1,000,000 per incident, and up to $3,000,000 per year. Tail coverage is indefinite. You will receive a yearly Certificate of Insurance (COI) copy mailed to you. If you would like a digital copy, you will be able to reach out to our Provider Relations team. Malpractice insurance is renewed yearly.

How much will I get paid?

Pay is based on several factors, including business line and visit types. This ensures clinicians are fairly compensated for the specific services provided and the care delivered.

Do clinicians need to be proficient in technology?

Yes, clinicians should have basic technological skills to succeed in telehealth. This includes familiarity with using computers, video conferencing tools, navigating new software, and various web browsers.

What equipment and environment do I need to conduct a video visit?

AMG clinicians can access our Converge platform from a desktop or laptop (compatible with both PC and Mac) with high-speed internet connection and video capability. Google Chrome is the preferred browser for accessing Converge. Mobile devices and tablets cannot be used.

Where can I take a video appointment?

Patient care should be conducted in a professional and secure indoor office space with a neutral, clean background that is free from distractions and outside noise. Only the clinician should be able to hear and see the encounter, with no uninvited individuals, pets, or excessive decorations allowed in or within audio access of the space. Conducting visits from cars or public spaces is strictly prohibited.

Am I allowed to see patients if I’m outside of the United States?

No. Due to legal and HIPAA considerations, clinicians and patients only have access the platform within the United States. Also, clinicians only provide care for patients located in the United States.

What can I prescribe?

In most states, prescriptions may result from a telehealth encounter if sufficient data is available to make a proper diagnosis. AMG clinicians can only prescribe certain medications online. AMG does not permit the prescribing of:

Amwell follows all state regulations regarding prescribing permissibility. In most cases, clinicians are expected to have a video connection to prescribe, even in states where phone-only prescribing is permitted. AMG’s clinical directors have created a Prescribing Policy offering guidance and best practices for prescribing.

How do I prescribe?

You will be able to e-prescribe and manage medications with the highest level of DrFirst integration including full formulary, up-to-date prescriptions and geolocation pharmacy selection.

How do I conduct a physical exam remotely?

We train our clinicians on how to perform physical exams on our platform. Our Chief Medical Officer co-wrote the curriculum for the American Board of Telehealth’s primary care modules. This training is offered to clinicians joining AMG. Additionally, we have a comprehensive set of proprietary clinical quality guidelines that outline the evidence-based and telehealth-specific guidance for the top conditions seen in our practice.
